This is the tall flower spike of the Agave americana. It was over 30 feet (10 meters) tall. Sorry, for the dark pic. Pic taken yesterday Dec. 20, 2008.

Yes, this plant does grow in the South of France and throughout the Mediterranean region...I have seen them growing there myself.
