Jacque it is very strange , they aren,t buds they are very hard , the girl at the centre said that she could only tell me that those pink bits had been grafted on , I thought that if I took one lump off I could grow another one but if it is grafted it would be a different plant wouldn,t it ????

They look like the fruits Amy....if you took one off I bet they would be full of seeds.......It looks very similar to a Prickly Pear....maybe of the same type. The fruits of the Prickly Pear are edible and full of sweet juice.

I think Janey's right - they're fruits.

When I saw the thumbnail size of this photo I thought they were beetroots. LOL.
I wonder how often Garden Centres have plants for sale which they can't identfy. LOL. Anyone else have that problem with plants they have bought?

Hywel is right. They are cactus fruit and edible. I'm trying to look for it myself in my books.

Just had a look on Google Amy and the fruits are known as Cactus or Indian Figs.....

I still think they are Beetroots. LOL

It's probably a type of Opuntia Amy. but I don't know what species. They're cacti with edible fruits. I wouldn't eat these incase there are some poisonous types.

Looks very much like a Opuntia ficus-indica or Barbary fig but what has me stumped is the lack of visible spines on the green part...there are quite a variety in this type cactus and various sites refer to them in an interchangeable way but they each have their own characteristics. The red fruit on the top is used for jams and jellies and the green parts are also used by the Indian and Mexican culture in their specialized food dishes.

I think someone dare take a slice of it and put it with there pudding! I still think it looks more like a veggie than a fruit.
