Apologies Hywel, TT and Gilli in my late responding, my daughter had taken her laptop with her to her worksite for over a week and doing it again tomorrow, so I'll try to catch up in the meantime . Hope all are well. Anyway this red ginger grows in tropical weather but I am sure you can have one potted there Hywel:-)
TT a big hello to you, yes warm climates only they thrive in.
Gilli thanks as usual for your kind comments, actually thank you all!

Panther,
You're very correct. Alpinia purpurea - Red Ginger is a very tropical plant...it is very difficult to grow as a houseplant and require a humid greenhouse or a subtropical or tropical (better in truly tropical) climate to grow well.
