I don't think I've seen a goldcrest before. Are they rare?

9 Jan, 2009

Wow Eileen I would never have thought goldcrests would feed off such a thing are there insects in the fat ball as only ever see them in tree tops looking for bugs.Great pic.

Not rare Spritz our smallest native bird usually quite shy and difficult to spot as feed in tops of conifer trees esp larch and cedars .They are tiny and weigh no more that a 20p piece.

I just saw a goldcrest in teh woods the other day - I got my camera out of my pocket, turned it on and then realised I had left teh memory card at home! Tut. Well done getting this shot of this seldom seen little bird :-)

Think these cameras would remember to tell you you ve forgotten the memory card wouldnt you.Oh they do dont they but you have to turn them on first - so they need to remind you to do that .. x

Co-incidence - my elder son in Herefordshire (way out in the wilds) has just phoned to say they've got a flock of Gold Finch - lucky him - we only have a few. Bought my daughter-in-law a feeder and niger seed for Christmas and the GF have found it already.

I saw a goldcrest for the first time last week, initially thought it was a wren but BB confirmed what it would be. It was so tiny, hopping around in a corsican pine tree, I'm so chuffed it has visited.

Is this the same as our little bird here we call American Goldfinch? If so we get lots of them and that looks like maybe a female. Nice shot Irish!
