This plant is Agave attenuata - Foxtail Agave. It grows wild here in San Diego everywhere.

They do resemble a bromeliad. Don't be so hard on yourself. LOL! Plant identification is a very tricky science even for the experts. Many unusual/ newly discovered plants can't be identified until they bloom...because all families of the plant kingdom are classified by flower structure to be simplistic.

Thanks God they ressamble each other!
I wont take the bromeliad already planted... :)
In a few years we will have some nice pink and red bromeliads side by side with foxtails :)
