Gladiolus papilio Ruby

Gladiolus papilio 'Ruby'...hardy corm I've grown for a while now. Very beautiful colouration and appears to thrive when running through other plants.

David, it flowers in summer. Some people find that it takes a rest some years from flowering but I haven't noticed this perculiarity!...yet!

If I found corms of this at the GC is it too late to plant for this summer? Have fallen in love with it!

Hi Gwendas, if you did find some corms it would be a good time to plant them. However I think its easier to find these corms already potted up because they form underground runners. Happy hunting and let me know if you are lucky!

~I have been admiring the colour because I love purple Chloris, but the ones I have seen for sale appear to be more of a dark crimson~do they fade to purple?

6 Mar, 2009

A tricky one Arlene, the photo is quite near to its true colour maybe a little more crimson, so I wouldn't call it purple, but it is a rich colour.
There is a gladiolus called 'Violetta' which is a very pretty purple and has the more usual gladiolus form.

~yes I know what you mean~I have been buying a dark maroon amaryllis but this year the one that is just starting to flower is more red than maroon and sometimes different screens show different shades .I like the form of this one over the traditional more tightly packed ones.

Thanks for info Chloris I will definitely try and find one or even 2 for my summer border!
