See that tiny little black dot in the middle of this newspaper photo (copyright-free photo) - look very carefully - that's a Boeing 737 trying to fly over the smoke from just one of the fires! Can you see it? It will give you an idea of the magnitude of these bushfires or rather firestorms and why they are so lethal - this is from one fire and just think - this photo doesn't even show the extent of the smoke! Thanks to all who have been checking on the Aussie participants of this website!

Yes thanks Hywel I'm just fine. I've been complaining about the flooding up here in the north-eastern part of Oz - (which has been horrible for many) - but this puts all that into perspective.

I'm watching this on the news and it really does put small problems into perspective. That's an amazing photo, makes you realise the scale of this.

The fires have been on the news constantly here in the UK and whilst it shocks you, its very hard to imagine the true horror that these fires cause and the panic for all those caught up in them.
I was trying to explain to my daughter just how vast and fierce these fires are, but I shall just show her your photo instead.

That is a terrible photo...but brings it home to us how dreadful it is. Our son lives in NSW and keeps us up with all the news too and the fact that this year there are schools of great white sharks in Sydney harbour...
