Squashed

Squashed (Cyprinus carpio)

Mirror Carp in my garden pond. My poor old mirror carp was given to me by a neighbour as a tiddler a number of years ago and has now grown to a size which I think is too big for my tiny pond. I'd like to give him to someone with a large pond but don't know anyone. I don't want him to go to a local public pond as I wouldn't like the thought of him being caught.

I'm worried that if I advertise him Jacque, he may end up somewhere he is not as well off as I'd like him to be. What I'd really like is for him to go to a public pond where they don't allow fishing.

Hope you find him a good home Toto

So do I Bonkers. I think it's cruel to keep him in my tiny pond now that he's reached the size he is.

Have you tried your local council parks department Toto ? Maybe someone there could advise you....

Thanks Bonkers, I'll give it try. Actually I know someone who works in the Local Council Parks Department so he may be able to point me in the right direction.

I will miss him Janey but it's not fair to keep him in such a small pond. I will let you know if I'm lucky. It will do both the fish and the wildlife a favour when he is rehomed.

Well Toto...you just never know!...wish you luck with him...he seems a bit unconcerned in this shot...

Yes Cat he does but I can't help it, I'm a real softie and I don't like to see him all cramped uo.

17 Feb, 2009

Can't blame you..he dosn't know what he is missing..so will be very happy when he gets a chance to know what that is.

Have you found him a new home Toto?

13 Feb, 2010

I did find him a new home in a very large pond, owned by two very caring people, unfortunately the man died a couple of months ago buthis wife still lives in the same place and continues to care for the land and the pond.

Glad he got a new home Toto. I have a koi carp who is about 12" long and my pond is not very big, I've been a bit worried that he may be too big for the pond too, he seems happy enough, what do you think?

15 Feb, 2010

It dpends on you Skillen. I don't know much about them. I do know someone who keeps Koi in a pond no bigger than about 4ft x 4ft but the pond is also about 4ft deep. I think it is wrong but who am I to say?
My carp was 21 inches long when I measured him before he went to his new home. Although I worried about him he did seem perfectly happy. I prefer to keep my pond for wildlife now as at least whatever decides to make it's home there does so by choice and there are no fish except a few sticklebacks to eat the larvae and young of other creatures like damsel and dragon flies and frogs etc.

Thanks Toto, I tend to agree. Our pond is about 7'x4' but not very deep. Never seem to get any frogs or dragon flies etc - maybe they're trying to tell me something lol.

The fish will definitely eat the larva.
