Hi Jacque, just took this photo when I walked Bonnie in the garden this morning. He's suddenly appeared in the last couple of weeks. He doesnt visit the bird table but BB says this area must be his territory. He was so close I could have nearly reached out and touched him :-)

Aw ...your very own Robin , he looks very happy there , I think you will see a lot more of him Dawn :o)

Hi Dawn
I get mealworms but usually put them on the bird table but I have blackbirds and starlings who eat them....I will maybe look for a stump in the woods as someone seems to have cut down loads of ivy and dumped it.
I have a pair of robins and nuthatches come to feed but I think they are probably nesting close by in the woods. They are lovely to watch.

Dear All, as you can see we do have untidy areas, lol but the wildlife like that I guess.
TT: Yes, we have a few robins that visit the bird table but this one stays in a corner of the garden well away from the house, close to the brook and behind the brook its just fields. I wonder if he's tame because he never sees humans (except me)? John has made me a couple of robin boxes so they'll be going up this weekend :-)
Jacque: Yes, this is our wood pile which never seems to get burnt, good for the insects though :-)
Arlene: I can't afford to put the meal worms out for all the birds :-( but they gets lots of other stuff. I've never seen a nuthatch but live in hope.

17 Feb, 2009

Well done Dawn - you managed to capture a nice shot of him and they quickly learn where to visit for treats , we too hide mealworms as you ve found Arlene the little ones dont get a look in from a birdtable.

As blackbirds love fruit and starlings fat - they get plenty without mealworms which are expensive to give to them all.I d swap a nuthatch for a kingfisher Dawn ! Well not literally but you know what I mean ...lol

Thanks BB. I was talking to my new (very nice) neighbour the other day and she's not settled in too well and the builder hasn't finished jobs and she's quite emotional about it all, then she went on to say her husband had seen the kingfisher flying along the top of the brook and this had really made the difference, how nice is that - I guess the best things in life are free!

Lovely photo of the Robin.

~I can't afford it either Dawn so I just put out one small tray per day and hope my robins get there by varying the times, but I know he made it this morning ,I saw him!
This morning I was in the woods, very quiet~nothing but birds singing their socks off~suddenly there was this flapping commotion and there was a collared dove settling into the thick ivy high up in one of the beech trees.
As I looked higher there was a hawk sailing over wings spread ~so maybe it had a lucky escape!
I would love to see a kingfisher too but do like the nuthatches~so streamlined cute and colourful!
A few years ago we had jays and they are very colourful too~but haven't seen them for quite a while.

I saw a Jay a few times in the Summer, they are so lovely. Is the wood close to you Arlene? You have the sea and beaches too :-) We see buzzards in our area which is quite scarey and poor Jacque hasnt seen her two robins since she had a visit from a sparrow hawk, but I guess that's nature :-(

Great Pic Dawn..

17 Feb, 2009

The wood starts really close at the back of the house maybe 30 yards~most of the birds come that way. But because everything is at weird angles about 50 yds at the front. There is a very muddy track running along the edge of the wood at sort of right angles to the street which is fenced off so when I go in with the dogs on the other side of it, it is relatively safe.I take them on the top path but the trees eventually slope down to the road which is very narrow and the trees continue up the other bank.
Harv was fascinated by the road sweeper which came slowly past which had flashing lights everywhere in the early light~he usually sits down to watch if there is anything happening ~proper nosey parker!

Thanks Deida.
Arlene: Your wood sounds lovely, this is great for the wildlife and very convenient for them to pop into your garden and your dogs are so lucky too with all those lovely walks they have with you. :-)

17 Feb, 2009

It's a sight when all the bluebells are out Dawn~ i think I have a photo of the bluebells already on but will take lots more this year~hoping for a lot!

17 Feb, 2009

Hi Arlene...we cannot afford to feed starlings etc..very greedy feeders with mealworms either .They get the dishes of fat and oatmeal. We have been reduced to hidind mealworms for the wrens, robins, and wagtail .! Made the mistake one day of watching £2 99 worth of mealworms disappear in seconds down starlings mouths..and still looking for more ! Lol

17 Feb, 2009

~ I put out small quantities of mealworms at a time but lots of peanuts which they like and they seem to like the berried fat from Wilkinsons at 99 pence~I don't have that many BB which makes all the difference!

17 Feb, 2009

Agree Arlene..the suet berries from Wilkos are great value.Keep it up you are doing a great job !

17 Feb, 2009

~I am noticing the sunflower hearts going down in the feeder and have seen bluetits and the nuthatch on them ~ great!
~ will go out shopping at the weekend for peanut feeders.
My lawn will never be the same, seeds everywhere ,shortly to be seedlings if I don't move sharpish!~new turf required I think!

17 Feb, 2009

The sunflower hearts are great value Arlene..all our visitors go crazy for them. Our lawn.......least said .....Lol

17 Feb, 2009

I havent seen the berried fat at Wilko's - must get some. My birds are emptying the peanut feeders every other day at the moment. I seem to have lots of Tits around just lately :-) and they love peanuts!

18 Feb, 2009

Hi Dawn..the berry suet pellets at Wilkos are their own brand...our birds love them...only £2 for a large bag...pink coloured.

18 Feb, 2009

Right, thanks, I'll look out for those, sound good value too. :0

He's lovely. Great picture. Our Robin who has been in our side garden since he was a youngster has just started going in our front garden this last week or two and feeding from the birdtable outside our window(unusual, I thought they were mainly ground feeders) but I'm not as quick with the camera as you. Nice shot!

20 Feb, 2009

Well Paul, my camera isnt that good and I'm certainly not good at taking photos but this robin is just so tame, I was only a couple of yards away from him when I took this. I feed him about the same time morning and afternoon and he's ususally waiting for me now. How long has your robin been with you then Paul?, sounds like his territory is your garden. We have other robins feeding from the bird table, but they dont stay long, grab a peanut and they're away!

20 Feb, 2009

Two summers ago he appeared as a very young bird but used ti scuttle up and down under our shrubs. He would come quite close and then fly or run off if we moved but now he doesn't seem to come near when we are about. He was very often seen on our compost heap but not so much now.
Before he was about, we saw two Robins together in our front garden quite a lot so I assume they were mum and dad. Young'n is obviously confident in the front garden as well as under the shrubs now. It's great to see him even through the window!

20 Feb, 2009

He's probably looking for a mate. Does he sing, that's a sign they are marking their territory. The one on the photo has only made his presence felt in the last few weeks. When we were out in that part of the garden he would sit in a bush nearby, singing away, then I started to feed him in the same place, at the same time and now he waits for me. Bliss.

Beautiful photo Dawn, very appropriate for me.
Sorry my comment is so late, I know you understand the reason.
Hope he stays with you a long time.

10 Mar, 2009

Sorry, Dawnsaunt. I missed your response, only just seen it today! Yes, he does sing sometimes, but then sometimes I don't see or hear himm for a few days, but the Robin seed Mix and dried mealworms that I put near my compost heap for him are still disappearing regularly. I hope he finds amate and stays in our garden. Chicks would be great.

Hi DoctorBob and Paul: I dont think there is nothing nicer than seeing the robin. I feed this robin every day around the same time, i.e 7.30am and then in the afternoon. This morning, as I worked towards his territory, he appeared in a tree nearby. I had the mealworms with me and I put them in my hand and stretched my arm out and low and behold he landed on my fingers, pick up a mealworm and fly off, unbelievable, I've never experienced anything so lovely before. :-)

That's great Dawn, had to make this pic. one of my favourites.
I don't think our Robins have been around lately, will have to keep an eye out for them.

Dawn...sure that wonderful experience is one which you will carry with you for a lifetime. You are so lucky...bet you have a smile on your face for days to come !

11 Mar, 2009

Yes, she certainly is Jacque. You hear of it but I can't imagine ever getting a robin to feed from my hand. I never stand still long enough!!! I can remember my mum feeding a Thrush regularly on the kitchen doorstep (from her hand)when I was a nipper!

11 Mar, 2009

Now that WAS lucky Paul since thrushes are usually very shy birds !

11 Mar, 2009

Yes, this is the robin. You're right Jacque, I am so lucky, never thought I would feel a robin's beak touch my hand ever in my life. BB, I sure will carry this experience with me for the rest of my life :-) I feel really lucky because I havent tamed him, its just the way he is :-) He's a bit wary of the dog but doesnt mind if I have John and Charlotte with me, he comes to feed only a couple of feet away, even if we're all there. The other day I was lighting a fire in that area and concentrating on getting it going and I turned and he was right next to me, I just said, Oh Hello!

14 Mar, 2009

You have a friend for life Dawn ! : )

14 Mar, 2009

I hope so BB. He loves the meal worms now, thank you so much for educating me :-)
