Yes Arlene...Jane here...my sister keeps him in a huge vivarium taking up the length of her lounge wall !
Spritz...body a foot long with tail to match ! Lol
Sorry Jacque....she has had him about 9 months,and he is spoiled rotten feeds him live crickets...dont think I could do it Lol

~couldn't do that either Jane!~ but sounds as though she is on the ball with her treatment and conditions,it certainly looks well and happy!
Gary had an Iguana brought in by one of the Inspectors and they had to do heat lamps and special food etc because the owner just wasn't looking after him properly.You can't just buy these on a whim for the kids!

unfortunately Arlene there are "fads" for exotic pets and they often end up in the wrong hands,as Gary will testify.This one has special heating and humidity,and generally lives the life of Riley !

I think that on the whole I prefer Henry...that dragon does not look cuddly and I couldn't handle live crickets! As Jacque said - EEEeeeeeeeeeeeew!!

Well not for me either Spritz but Jane s sister loves her and rescued from the sort of circumstances Arlene descibes.

She sprays it with warm water like you would a houseplant and she closes her eyes and sticks her tongue out ..

Well I think he,s kind of cute ,he has an intelligent look about him quietly watching and taking it all on board .... I wouldn,t like feeding live things to a creature though , It would feel cruel even though it,s natural for them :o)

Ooh...I think he's very handsome.......i like lizards etc.....they're so interesting to watch and this one has a kind of frown on his face....now where are all those chirping crickets......ugh! We had some large brown grasshoppers when we had the Spanish garden and one day our cat Nina caught one...I can see her now running off with the stiff long legs hanging out of her mouth..............shiver!

Thanks Eileen and Ff..knew very little about them before,but seeing how she has been cared for has taught me a lot.........Toto...was very underweight a couple of months before this photo was taken.Some people should never acquire these creatures unless they are prepared to look after them properly....

He's obviously in very good hands now.

i agree with you BB. ciara spent almost a year reading about chameleons and asking owners about them before she bought Karma.
couldnt believe what i saw for sale in our garden centre here last week... a Kookaburra bird, the poos thing looked so sad in the cage on his own

I really would think this different to birds bred in captivity Eileen.Surely such a bird taken from the wild and transported - never heard of such a bird being sold but if in a garden centre surely they would not risk selling illegally ? sounds as if it should be though.

Difficult isnt it Eileen many would say wrong to have such exotic pets but then these cannot be returned to the wild so if being neglected is it wrong for others to offer a kinder enviroment.?

I agree with you Bonkers, but all the time we offer those kinder environments the more trade there is for the importers and sellers and the more neglect can be dealt out by inconsiderate people who only buy for the status or on a whim and do not properly care for them. It is very difficult to know what the answer is but I believe that the trade in exotic pets should be banned by law with heavy penalties for those who ignore it. As for what I would describe as normal pets, I believe that the law should be tightened and anyone found being cruel to or neglecting an animal in their charge should be subjected to very severe penalties, not the slap on the wrist they seem to get at the moment. Sorry about this outburst, I'll get off my soapbox now, but it does make me so angry.

Difficult one Toto and do not feel you need to apologise.We applaude people who rescue cats and dogs...yes..agree with a total ban,much like with tortoises,but when an animal already here and suffering,wouldnt critisize anyone who rescues it from abuse ! Off my soapbox now too !

~i do know quite a lot about this as my son in law is the manager of our local RSPCA centre~there are some cruel but also some very kind people out there.It is great when someone comes forward to take on an older animal and look after it's ailments etc. and give it a good life.All praise to them!

I agree, if an animal is already here then it should be properly cared for and the people that take on that responsibility must be applauded and would certainly have my full and unreserved respect.
I think the RSPCA do a wonderful job Arlene. Afraid they wouldn't want me now though. Still I still support them when I can.

that's good Toto ~ a lot of the sites like Gary's get no central funding from the RSPCA apart from an amount to cover the costs of providing offices for the inspectors and housing for case animals.This means they have to fund themselves through their shops legacies and fundraising~it is always an ongoing battle!

same over here, government funding is a pittance, they relay mostly on donations. when i can i bring blankets , chewies watever they need down to our local pound.
mind you having said that our childline services get No funding at all from the government. its a disgrace

I wonder how the Kookaburra found its way to a pet shop....that is so terrible! He needs warmth, sunshine and freedom..it should be transported back to Australia on the next flight. Next best thing would be somewhere like Gerald Durrells zoo on Jersey....where it could have a controlled flight and species of it's own to be with.
Maybe we could contact the zoo Eileen and see if they would buy it from the garden centre?

Well done Eileen~they need bedding towels newspapers toys etc and volunteers to dog walk~all help is much appreciated!

Always contribute to our local RSPCA shop with bits and bobs,and shop there too The bargains to be found there are brilliant.Also put into their collecting boxes on the counter !Every little helps ......

am patting my back pocket as we speak!! Seriously folks thanks to all who do contribute whether giving or buying.,
In Gary's time at the centre I have personally seen a load of snakes from one house,chipmunks,parakeets parrot and budgies,iguana plus goodness knows how many breeds of dogs and cat srats hamsters etc
They also take in rescued baby seals feed them and take them to a seal sanctuary in Norfolk~ thay are returned when older and able to look after themselves and released near where they were found.
The staff have to be commended for the work they do and as BB says ~every little helps!

So true Arlene perhaps if there were a ban like with tortoises but animals already here could be cared for till the end of their natural life then we could see an end to such a cruel trade.

We have a seal sanctuary in Scarborough and Jane and I often go to Ravenscar cliffs where the seals come within yards of you - just have to check high tides as can be cut off in the bay !

Wow, how nice, my daughter would love him, she adores snakes. Crickey, I wouldnt dare touch him, I'm OK with spiders but scared of reptiles.

Dont really like frogs and toads either. I'm OK with toads as they dont jump and I do re-home them when I disturb them when I find them under rocks. I do love them but I'm a big scared of them - have you ever heard frogs squeel?

No, not nice at all. I've heard them, probably when our cat got one too. Quite eerie!

I'm not one for reptiles but green lizards and snakes have such beautiful shades of green and do look beautiful in their natural habitat - nice picture.
