Thanks Eileen. I was only asking because Beryl's grandparents were Scottish. I thought maybe it was near where they were from , but it's not. They were from Ayr and Aberdeen.

~my great grandmother on my dad's side was from Ayrshire~went into service at age 13 and then got married and had nine children living in Lowestoft where my dad was born.

~That's right Amy~he moved north after the war because he met my mum whilst posted up there~we used to go there a lot on holiday~still have relatives.

My great grandma was Mary Shields 1848 to 1926 her father was John but can't find any more info~think the family was from Ireland Eileen~the only country I don't have relatives from is Wales Hywel !
My mums father was Kelly I think but am waiting for the 2011 census to do a better trace. Can go back to 1641 on my dad's surname which was Roberton~no males to carry on the surname~all the girls had boys and all the boys had girls~isn't that weird!

6 Mar, 2009

Well you live here instead Arlene. lol
The name Shields isn't in Beryl's family. Oh well - never mind . We can still share fuchsias :o)

It's a small world Amy! I have fond memories of the area where my gran lived where there were these lovely water lilies~big spreads~ absolutely gorgeous!I still have the picture clearly in my mind.

i think its great Hywel, im enjoying reading all the comments.

Arlene , you might be interested to know a lot of the surenames over here used to have O before them , like my name ,,,, o halloran.
some took the O out dues to superstition, they reckoned the O brought bad luck

6 Mar, 2009

Interesting about the superstition Eileen....what a fabulous photograph !

A lot or Welsh surnames developed from the word ap or ab in front of the father's name - meaning ' son of ' . So you get names like Powell, - ap Howell; or Bevan, - ap Evan etc. But it was more usual to adopt the English method - so you have Howells or Evans instead of Powell or Bevan. I wonder why they thought the O was superstitious ?

7 Mar, 2009

interesting about the Welsh names Hywel. im not sure where the superstition came from,, just know some peole thought the 0 was bad luck

7 Mar, 2009

Shame that is. :o(

7 Mar, 2009

~the English forms Jackson,Robertson,Anderson etc are the same Hywel and of course you have the occupations like Smith,Baker,Miller,Cook ,Forester
etc~fascinating!

Yes I have some books on surnames. It's very interesting. In my ancestry thet's a Mary William. Her father was William David. His father was David something probably. It was before they had settled surmanes.
And there are nicknames thet stuck - Long , Snow etc.
