I like how the pots are in the ground... Does this help retain water?

I think so Tastey ~plus it keeps the flowers up off the ground and they can change them around as necessary~

Lovely photo,is this the Wisley Alpine house? If it is, I love this place. It's full of mouth watering plants at all times of the year. This picture makes me want to visit now! The idea of the sand plunge is to give a cooler root run for the plants, help prevent drying out, stop the roots freezing and also has the advantage of letting a collection of different sized pots be nicely presented by varying the level at which they are plunged.
