Surviving Pansies.

Surviving Pansies.

These Pansies are from a packet of seed which I bought from Netto for 29p last June. The variety are "Swiss Giants" and have been flowering in this hanging basket since then right through all the frost and snow. Now I know I like to get good value from my plants but this is just insane.
Needless to say I have just sown another tray full.

I am no expert by any means but I thought winter flowering pansies were plants bred to flower when the hours of daylight were shorter or are slightly hardier pansies sown later in the year.
I would be tempted to sow them in late July or August while there is still sufficient warmth for them to germinate and then plant them out.
No doubt I am completely wrong and someone on Goy will give you a definative answer.
Good luck.

I have just ordered a packet of "Rokoko Russian frilly edged pansy" from Ebay.
I was tempted by the photos on Goy of frilly ones, if they all manage to grow I will have Pansies coming out of my ears!

from the look of these it doesn't matter that you're late with this years seeds!! talk about value for money.
Last year my winter pansies flowered thro' til July - they seemed to get a new lease of life in March 08

Just set the Rokoko ones from Ebay off. Didnt realise "Russian" meant as in from the USSR ! All the instructions were in "Russian", stupid me!!
They had been posted in an ordinary envelope and a lot of the seeds had been crushed, Oh well, put them in a seed tray and hope for the best.
Fingers crossed.
