Thanks Eileen - that is so cool Dawn all the years I ve been gardening never had one in my hand but would sit on the fork for hours .. correction for a few seconds as was always using it ! Yeah right lol

You are funny BB! You've just endorsed how lucky I am to have this robin! But I dont get it ... I've not tamed him, he has found me:-) He's not shy at all. I initially thought he had never seen humans before so he was not frightened but now I wonder if someone else has tamed him and he's ended up here. Love him ...... I hold out my hand, he flies down, touches my hand without actually landing and get a meal worms and flies into the nearest bush or goes on the floor to eat it, quite amazing x

Perhaps Dawn think they do get bolder as need to feed young increases and certainly they ve learnt that gardeners will turn over soil for them .. more likely to get a blackbird in my hand as they swoop down and sit on the bench by the side of us .
31 Mar, 2009
Aint it funny though BB how you have the tame blackbirds and I have the robin. Your probably right though about him being hungry, because he's only been around since Christmas, hence the bad weather. We are lucky arent we! :-)
31 Mar, 2009
We certainly are Dawn...money could not buy that feeling as they swoop down at our hands to take the food..and welcome !
31 Mar, 2009
So lovely to share with you that feeling BB :-) I just feel blessed to experience their trust :-).

Remember when we had all that snow and thick ice and were having to clear the ice and snow away a few times a day so the birds could get the food! Distant memory now.
31 Mar, 2009
Seems a lifetime away Dawn...but the birds are stil eating for England !Lol
31 Mar, 2009
I know .... they seem as hungry as ever, do you think they are stocking up ready for when they have their young? Need to get fat balls and nuts etc. etc.
31 Mar, 2009
Great pic BB.....he looks how we all feel right now!!
31 Mar, 2009

31 Mar, 2009
There's only one thing for it BB .... you come to mine with the live meal worms and feed my robin for yourself! He would love you.

I get My mealworms from C J Wild Birdfoods. I order them online one day and they normally arrive the next day or the day after. Their website can be found at:-

WOW, thanks Toto. That's brilliant, hadnt really thought about how I was going to purchase them - wonderful. MIght treat my little friend now!!!
BB: Just get on the A1M and keep going south, lol.

Thanks Dawn - what do I do when I get to the end of it ? lol
Get ours from Wilkos at £2,50 a pot cheapest in our area .
1 Apr, 2009
Errrr, not sure BB where to get off, lol.
I was thinking of getting live meal worms for when they have their young - do you think the live ones would be more beneficial for the young or would the dried ones (soaked) be OK?
1 Apr, 2009
The live ones so expensive Dawn and seen other birds collect mouthfuls to feed their young so would recommend the dried variety.
Not that it means much as go so quick but the dry ones keep for so much longer..
1 Apr, 2009
Thanks BB for the advice. I'm a bit paranoid about this as I remember watching Spring Watch a couple of years ago and a poor robin was struggling to feed its young - cant remember if the young died or if the young and the parent died too :-( t .... if only they'd put live meal worms out they would have been OK, grrr, Quite sad .....
1 Apr, 2009
Sadly Dawn they do have a very high mortality rate - out in depths of winter fighting sometimes to the death over territory , their lifestyle not conducive to longevity . So any food would be appreciated and to have one come to your hand truly special ..

spetacular

I've never tried the dried mealworms Bonkers. I must admit that I find the live ones very expensive but am not sure whether the dried ones have the nourishment that the babies need. You've got me wondering now. I'll be alright for a little while as ordered more mealworms a couple of days ago but may try the dried ones next time or may get some now and mix them with the live ones.
