Another version of the newspaper pot - interested to see how you make yours with the built-in lifter! Seedlings are doing very well.

Hi Milky & Bernieh - thanks for your comments! Yes have been busy w/seedlings. Didn't realize until after I posted this photo that the lifters didn't show. They are simply strips of this plastic-ish "material" that comes wrapped around things you buy in boxes, like electronics, etc. I cut strips, then holes in the middle portion so watering from the bottom works better. They go in the pot first; the ends hang over the sides. Then the newspaper pot goes in (the plastic pot). Last year, I had trouble lifting the newspaper pots out because of wetness - they tended to rip when I pulled. Hopefully this year when I'm ready to transplant my peas, lifting out will be a breeze.

I planted some sweet pea seeds in toilet roll tubes last autumn. I first lined a seed tray with cooking foil, to give an impermeable reusable base, then I filled the tubes with potting compost & planted the seeds, 2 to a tube. Most grew up fine though I find the outside tubes seem to dry out faster than the others.I planted them out last month in their flowering positions.

Another great idea! Never thought of using toilet paper tubes before! I usually cut them up and put in the compost. It's fun to think up new ways to reuse stuff! I've had only mild luck with direct planting some plants outdoors (like peas). Starting indoors in homemade paper planters gives me better success, plus it's also better for those plants that don't like their roots disturbed when transplanting.
