The first slow-worm seen in the compost bin this year. Later this afternoon there were two, one male and one female so fingers crossed for more babies.

You are so lucky/talented having something like this in your compost heap!

How long is it ? I don't think I get any, just snakes here.

Lucky yes. Talented no Mageth.
Dead right Milky, the world may catch up one day, but not for a while yet.
This one was about 10 inches or 250mm Lil. It is not a snake, but a legless lizard (had too many beers) and they grow to a little over 18 inches or 450mm.

Beautiful little creatures. I think they are protected now, aren't they? I wish some would move in this me but my compost is not very successful this year.

Yes, definitely protected Cee.

We get grass snakes in our garden, they live under my neighbours compost heap - I'm a bit scared of them, sometimes they surprise me when I stumble upon them (not literally) when they're basking in the sun. They swim across our pond too!

Grass snakes love the water and eat lots of frogs. They are not poisonous but may bite if threatened.

Woooooo, now you've scared me Toto, lol. I'll be tip toeing through the grass now (not the tulips), ha ha.

8 Apr, 2009

If they hear or feel you coming, they will be long gone. They are no threat to you.

OK Toto - I believe you, lol. They just send shivers down my spine like your slow worms, I dont dislike them though but give me spiders any day, I'm not scared of them.

9 Apr, 2009

Spiders, snakes, they are all lovely. Even snakes don't normally bite. At least not our British ones. I am quite happy to pick up a grass snake. Provided you treat them gently they soon settle down and are easy to handle. Try smelling one. They smell like cabbage.

Ha ha, I dont think I will be getting that close Toto, but I do like cabbage, lol.
