Janette, Newfie and Lujean. No a slow-worm is not a snake, it is a legless lizard and along with the three true British snakes it is a protected species. The male is generally a dark silver colour while the female is more golden brown. If attacked by a predator it can shed it's tail in the same way that some other lizards do. They grow to around 18 inches (450mm long) and have eyelids which snakes do not. Being non venomous slow-worms are totally harmless to man, that is of course, unless you are a small insect or slug etc.
Hope this info helps.

Lovely to have a pair. They do a lot of good in eating the slugs etc in the garden.

I'm glad there are still a few like you around Lindak. Thank you.

We got used to them on the Isle Of Wight where we lived and had our allotment just up the road near a golf course. They really are harmless.

I have often picked them up to show the grandchildren and by holding them gently they soon realise that they are in no danger and settle in your hands.

They feel cool to the touch but are not at all slimy and as you say toto handle them gently.

Gentleness is the answer whenever handling any animal Lindak and especially when handling these as if they become frightened / stressed they shed their tail and this, in turn takes away their safety device for a while, leaving them more vunerable to predators.

I think that it's great what you are doing with your granchildren, teaching them about nature and how to treat the wild life with respect.

I's like to think so. The trouble with many kids is, if it's not on a mobile phone or a computer game they seem to have no idea of all the beauty around them.

It's the pace of life today Toto, and I think that some children miss out on an awful lot of good things in life bcause of all the electronic games etc, and I think that's all going into young minds as they are learning about life. I don't think that it's always a good thing for them to be sat in their rooms playing these fantasy games, they ought to be out and about learning about the real things in life.

I couldn't agree more.
