Hummingbird on Iris

hummingbird sipping nectar from yellow iris. had never seen one feeding from these irises before. captured from open front window with telephoto lens. front patio area.

Yes, we really love these little feathered jewels, very entertaining with the way they hover, and manoever with so much agility, changing directions so quickly, even flying backwards :) Their iridescent feathers are gorgeous, especially the rufous males, who have this beautiful golden red/orange gorget or throat, which glints amazingly when the light catches it. They purposely sit where the light reflects from it, so that the females are attracted to them :) Their courtship diving displays are incredible too. Almost scarey, as they plummet towards the earth from high up in the treetops, - you think they won't come out of their dive in time! Of course, this is also to attract the female, which will be somewhere nearby.
