Northern Flicker on special feeder

Northern Flicker on special feeder

another Northern Flicker image, this time on the special feeder for woodpeckers etc, as it has a special "paddle" at the bottom for them to rest their tails against, enabling them to feed on the suet cake more easily. This is in our front driveway area, captured thru open front window with telephoto lens

hi again Tina, sorry it's head got cut off here, - but thanks for the nice comments. It is nice seeing photos of birds and animals and scenery from other places. I often enjoy dvd's mainly for that reason, as we never travel far afield (don't like "flying) plus hate leaving our pets.

Hi Alandrapal, don't worry about the head as I can still see the markings.I just love anyhting to do with Nature and watch all the wildlife programmes etc...
My hubby hates flying as well so will never get to seeing all these wonderful sites that you have on your doorstep. We have pets as well and hate having to leave them as we always worry about them.We used to take Tina with us everywhere and only started putting her into Kennels for the last couple of years of her life so know how you feel....

I agree with you, Alandrapal, I love anything to do with nature...You truly have a great variety of birds at your fingertips...We do, too but I can't capture them very well because I am constantly monitoring the activities of my cats...hehe...It's either, take the time to get a shot or take a chance on the cats getting there first...this time of year when there are so many birds nesting nearby, I have to limit my cats time outdoors which they hate...

Another wonderful bird, you said the feeder was designed for woodpeckers is the FLicker a species of woodpecker? Must see if I can get hold of one of these feeders as we do occasionally get woodpeckers.

thankyou all for the very nice comments, I do appreciate them and your interest and am happy to share the images with you all. Pansypotter, yes the Flicker is a type of woodpecker, infact think I read that it's the only ground feeding woodpecker variety. We used to put the large flake porridge oats up on a flat surface for the birds, and the Flickers would eat those too. They have very long tongues!, used to pry insects out of holes in trees and other narrow places. That type of feeder really does help this type of bird to balance in order to feed. They love the suet cakes.

Glad you know what we mean and feel the same way, Tina, about leaving the pets and flying. I think I have a bit of a mental block about leaving them, harking back to childhood days, as had to leave my beloved dog behind in England, when we moved out to Canada, so this is one reason why I think I feel so strongly about this.

You have some lovely bird pictures, please keep them coming, dont like flying either, travel by ferry, no animals left now to look after, other than our daughters dogs, or our grandchildren.
