I bought two of these today , mine are called candy stripe as well , I like the way it fits into that stone BB , very attractive !

This is one of the few plants that I can find the label for. I bought mine last year from B & Q. It was then in a 3 1/2" or 4" pot. It is now in a ten inch pot and spilling over the side.
Dee. We are all led to believe that alpines are small as they only seem to be sold in small pots. When a friend and myself were descending from a ridge in the Sierra Navada (Spain) it was the time of the spring melt. Alpines sold here in 2" or 3" pots were growing in mounds about 5 - 6 ft across.

Really Toto, So will they grow so big here ?

10 May, 2009

Thanks all - sorry Dee looks like in a stone trough but this only the size of a housebrick , thanks for help with ID not many details from nursery but wont complain for 40 p !

I doubt it Dee, I was not referring to the Alpine phlox as I didn't see one of these. I was referring, generally to other Alpines which I saw. The conditions are so different. During the spring melt I saw them growing on a hillside which was constantly awash with water from the melting snow higher up. Later in the year they would be subject to temperatures higher than we generally have. Together with the different drainage, I guess that they would not perform the same. They are very beautiful to see and I couldn't really believe at the time but it is true.
Someone with more knowledge of Alpine flowers is required to answer you question. So where are you?

Really looks great in your stone trough. What's the variegated plant on the left side just behind the stone trough ? My curosity is getting the best of me !

15 May, 2009

very pretty bb. cant seem to keep them in my garden :o(

15 May, 2009

Oooo thats very pretty, wonder if something like that would grow on my old well.

15 May, 2009

Thank you - the variegated plant is an ivy Flower , it was in a potted plant display so put in garden long after everything else finished. There are dozens of varieties the closest I could get to it was called Hedera Goldchild.

Yes they can be a bit leggy Sbg not sure its recommended but I clip off old flowering shoots when done to keep central crown healthy. In past have found this tends to die back as plant spreads.

Hi Norfolk one things for sure and old well should provide ideal drainage but they do like the sun when we get it !

Ok ! Glad to hear kingfisher sighted again !

17 May, 2009

Yes, I'm pleased too but didnt see him today but horrible here, wet and windy again. I was telling Jaque the baby moorhens are lovely but very, very shy so no chance of a pic I dont think. They dive when they see me :-(

17 May, 2009

Wet and windy here too.but still on patrol...trying to keep the sparrowhawk at bay ! What a scary sight..me in coat and woolly hat charging around the garden ! At least Rocky still came for mealworms...doesnt seem to mind what I look like ! He recognises me anyway ! LOL

17 May, 2009

Has the sparrowhawk been visiting then Jane, grrrr :( Remember what happened to poor Jacque's robins.

Dont worry about the attire Jane, I'm just the same as you. Police helicopter just went over, me being nosey had to go out with Bonnie, quickly put on Johns old anorak over my pyjamas and then slipped into my wellies, lol. The helicopter just hovered around up the road so dont know what's hapening there. What a sight. Keep those birds safe Jane, I know you will. The birds must have good hearing I reckon, cos mine always seem to know when I'm approaching.

17 May, 2009

Ray says...we will look out for you on Crimewatch Dawn ! Lol
We have nesting mistle thrushes now and the female watches for me to put out scones and..wait for it...chopped up grapes..spoilt or what. She comes in to feed right under my nose ! Trouble is Rocky is jealous...what a balancing act !

17 May, 2009

ha ha, you'll recognise me on Crimewatch from the clothing, lol. Oh and I tucked my dressing gown into my PJ's so it didnt drag - so look out for a barrel shaped person, ha ha.
Great news about the mistle thrush Jane, you must be thrilled and you get to see her close up and Ray says they are normally shy. Grapes and scones - wow, can I come and live with you.
I'm sure Rocky will understand - so many mouths to feed! All about sharing, lol.

17 May, 2009

No problem Dawn..just bring some of those tasty tomatos with you ! Lol

17 May, 2009

Be about mid-July before they're ready, so see you then, lol

17 May, 2009
