Thank you - a pair nesting in the same yew tree as the Collared Dove so fledglings soon .. more scones please .

They are quite rare now aren't they. I've seen only one this year and that was on only one occasion. I can't remember seeing any last year.

Yes Toto they are amber listed ( flagged for future endangered listing ) by BTO which notes a significant fall in their numbers since the 1970s supposed to be the shyest of thrush family but these 2 love their fruit and we have quite a feeding campaign . Think the pond has also been a huge draw as they spend many minutes on the same rock each day bathing .

Like you and your glorious bugs couldnt imagine a garden without them.

Knew you would approve Jacque..lots of daisies and dandelions in our lawn ! Lol

Let's hope that there are enough people who care to help back to their pre 70's numbers. It can't all be a matter of habitat destruction, can it? I remember them in the East End of London when I was a child and that wasn't the most ideal environment for them.

I just love your wildfowers Bonkers, looks like your new buddy the thrush has taken a shine to them as well !

15 May, 2009

Thanks Flower looks wild doesnt it ? Be nice if this was all that grew but other more pernicious weeds soon follow and rabbit too old to keep it down now ..so out with mower .

Don't thrushes eat worms and bugs too? We are throwing down so much in the way of pesticides that it's no wonder if their food supply is dwindling.

17 May, 2009

These larger thrushes feed more freely on fruit and berries Elke but your point is a good one even if chemicals do not directly kill birds they can affect fertility and weaken egg shells .. a garden without wildlife and birdsong is a desert .

Ah, thanks for the update, BB. A lot of small town and even large urban areas here are now banning the use of what they call "cosmetic pesticides/herbicides", and it's quite amazing how wildlife is returning to those areas.

17 May, 2009

That can only be good news Elke !
