Looks like Arbutus Unedo - we call them the Irish Strawberry Tree over here.

Oooooooooo a "medronheiro"... yes the fruits are edible but portuguese people like to produce a liquor... "Licor de Medronho" - Brandymel

I thought they resembled strawberries in the earlier photo! If it is Arbutus Unedo the fruits are edible but don't taste like strawberries (I've just Googled for info) but I'd give them a try :)

Aleyna, I think I like the sound of that! Sounds better than the fruit!

On second thoughts, after reading Aleyna's comment, I'll wait until they've been turned into alcohol!!

Apparently Marguerite this is a native to southern Spain and Portugal and - would you believe it - south-western Ireland. It was bought over here from Ireland in colonial times and was recorded as being planted at Elizabeth Farm in 1823. I think the fruit actually looks a lot like lychee.

So Alenya I guess you are going to have to tell me how to make this potent liquor - let me know everybody, how many glasses are needed for the rendezvous .......
