Mama Raccoon last year

Mama Raccoon last year

So hungry from nursing, she would even visit the birdfeeder platform at daytime. I had made sure not to leave seeds out at nightfall, so she adapted.

We often forget, in our snug houses..how hard it must be for the wild creatures to find a home in an area where all habitat has been removed... these little folk are very good at adaptation... being a woman it's hard not to sympathise with a lactating mother as well. The mother of my raccoon was killed on a highway....and her babies huddled around her corpse....mine was the one that didn't spit or bite when he was picked up so he became my pet...the others were fed until they decided to go off on their own... Chuckles was killed by a weasel when he went out for a midnight ramble.

How sad. I befriend the squirrels, hand taming the occasional one and am horrified every time they dart across the busy road here. I moan every loss and they were not even really pets.

That is very sad Lori. I lost a dozen or so quail, one being a pet, and maybe 6 pheasants to a weasel. It killed every single one in one night. We used to raise quail and pheasant to release back into the wild.

I had a mamma raccoon come out with her 3 babies at any hour of the day ! There is no loss of habitat here so it must be that they're just extremely hungry and too anxious to wait for dark.
