Readily available here in the UK, Seweingkilla - now that I know what this is (other pics by GOY members to be found here, too). But, am doubrfuly about its hardiness here. May have to lift and store over winter, or keep in otsd and move pots into a frost-free place?

Right ok thanks for that David, i definitely want some of them am off bulb hunting!!

Good Luck with the hunt, Sewingkilla. The bulbs are out of season right now (they are planted in Spring). but you never know what you might find somewhere.

i have tried these several times but with no luck, same with Nerines, are the alkaline David?

Not that I know of, Majeeka. Not knowing what they were, I just potted the bulbs in Homebase multi-purpose compost, and watered now and then. This was done in late March, and the pot was outside all the time. I wonder what happened with yours? Sorry to hear about this. :-(

Lovely David, I want some now!! Will have to look out for them later in the year.

never mind, might have had something to do with the fact that they took there chances straight in the bed :-( will do it properly next time....lol

Ah, I think this may have been your downfall, Majeeka. All descriptions I have since read say that they are great in POTS on the patio, which, of course, makes them easier to move indoors in the winter. :-)
Lol, Sewingkilla, just read my strangely-spelled message above, I'll put mine in my shed!
I just checked the Garden Centre here on GOY. Two companies offer it under the name Hymenocallis festalis:- GardenCentre.co.uk, and greenfingers.com (so you can get this without even leaving GOY - but not until later this year, as it is "out of season"). My Dad remembered he got the 3 bulbs he gave me, as a freebie, from a multiple purchase he made by mail order from Spalding (www.spaldingbulb.co.uk), and I used his catalogue to identify my lovely blooms, - but they don't have any in stock yet, either. At a retail price of £1.99 per bulb, I think he got a bargain - as did I ! :-)

definately, as i remeber though i got 3 bulbs from Tesco for £1.50.... yes i did say Tesco... i would never normally buy this sort of thing from there, but they just jumped off the shelf and landed in my trolly completely by accident while i was inocently walking past.... that may also have had something to do with it, Tesco are not realiable for this sort of stuff are they.

Pity this "accident" (?) didn't have a happy ending. I bought some bare roots of chocolate cosmos at Tesco in Spring. Only one is just beginning to show through the compost surface in a pot. The ones I've grown from seed sown last year are now planted out and in full bloom.

Thanks for the info about the garden centre here David, as a reminder I have just added this to my wish list.

You're very welcome, Pg! Hope you get them when they first come up for sale again. :-)

Three times I've tried with this & failed!!
Will give it another go.
31 Aug, 2009
This is the first time I've had this. Perhaps it was beginner's luck? I simply palnted my three bulbs together in a pot with Homebase' own brand of multi-purpose compost, and kept moist.

Had a look at the one that I've just lost. I think that I may have kept it too moist as the bulb was just mush.

I have a flower coming for the first time!
Size is everything - I bought two bulbs, probably 80mm diameter at two quid a pop, and stuck them in pots up to their necks only.
