The fireweed here is just starting up. It is everywhere. First seed wisp you see on these, 5 weeks til winter. Sad but true:-( The seed usually starts up last week of July, so no worry now.

Close, once the seeds start to show on this fireweed. They just started blooming so I've most of the month left before that 5 week count down.

~oh that's so sad GT!

Short summers but everything is still at 'growing like wildfire' right now. I pull out my fireweed when it tries getting me to count down. I'll have the greenhouse to extend things a little more this year. :-)

enjoy the rest of the summer.....

Lovely photo...
treasure each warm day. :o)

I'm treasuring each moment. I like the cool fall days best of all, though the garden at peak and the cold coming on all at once is a little sad. :-) Everything troops right on until the snow piles on them. :-)

~we will all be wishing you as long as possible before that happens GT~I hope the greenhouse will stand up to the weather and give you extra space!

Beautiful photo!
I can't believe your winter will come so soon.

They bloom through July, but all of them are just starting to top out. I expecting the count down to start next week. We are hearing it will come slowly and mildly. I'm hoping that is true.

Does your Winter start in late August? or earlier?
27 Jul, 2009
Usually late August. Last year we got into september and only a few had stopped blooming. Snow third week of Sept. I guess it fall with chance of snow. :-)

I can't imagine such a short growing season. Most places
I've lived in my life have had a 365 day growing season or
close to it.
It's ironic here in San Diego late August through November is our hottest day time temps...November is the sunniest month of the year.

i love the seasons.
my favorite is the autumn. the way the leaves change colour and drop. the fruit on the trees. .
but then theres the winter when we see all the structure of the bear trees. the fresh winds. the empty roads....
..spring is so full of promise, and bright new growth....
summer here is usualy over very fast. as its so busy with plant sales, watering and lots of visitors....

I like the seasons too.
I would like to get back to a milder winter again this year though ;)

me too Louise.
i know we dont have it as bad as you GT...but last year was the worst winter here for years. i lost loads of plants. i'll be more prepared this year....

Yeah, you guys got it hard last year. Ours is rough, but we can rely on it. We may have a late fall and mild winter from the flow pattern on the pacific. I'm hoping. Just enough early snow to keep all the plants and bushes cozy. Please. I'm venturing a guess on first frost third week of september. That is very late, but I'm hoping.

I only like one season. Warm. LOL!!!
If it could be a high of 82 degrees and a low of 68 degrees every day of the year...that would be perfect!
30 Jul, 2009
i like 68 but when it gets into the 80s im off into the shade. we're just not used to it here in wales...lol

Sandra:
68 degrees can be confortable in the middle of winter (which is our average high temp. in winter)
68 degrees is our normal low temperature here where I live
in summer...it's only for a couple of minutes in the early morning, then the temp. starts going up quickly to our normal high...which is around 87 degrees.
