Crissue:

Yes, they look very similar because they're all in the same family: Xanthorrhoeaceae. :>)

What I like? under soucal's hotter sun King palm trunks will bleach to an attractive light gray. Mine are still brown even though they have 6 and 10' (over 20' overall) of ringed trunk.

Have you seen the larger king palms around the Bay? There's many...many even survived the 1990 freeze. The King Palms in the Palmetum at Lakeside survived the 1990 freeze with no problems...now, the Howeas were a different story, most of them died. Do you remember the beautiful Euterpe edulis which were located at the Palmetum, before the 1990 freeze?

I have seen quite a few- not that they are now common. The tallest I spotted in the fruitvale area of Oakland..about 35'? or more?. There is one in Hayward that has fronds that reach over a three story Motel...But I've never seen one with that nice very light gray patina. Well, since most are post 1990..actually Andy,I didn't see them offered by HD or Lowes until 2000 commonly. You can tell-like mine- the ones you do find are in that age range and about 20'+..they havent had much time to bleach out. Or,it is the general lack of 85f+ weather here.

I was surprised to see many being planted in the developments around San Jose. I almost felt like I was here in San Diego. There's many in the hills of Warm Springs, Fremont and Mission San Jose.

If you want to see a good 20 year old clump of five trees (which I planted in August of 1994) check out Bruce Dr off of Washington Blvd. in Mission San Jose, Fremont. Those trees were tiny liners when they were planted in the ground around the first week of August 1994.

I know the of the large King Palm next to the now dumpy hotel off A St. at the 880 Freeway. It was planted sometime around 1985. It actually survived the 1990 Freeze with no damage. I think because it's planted in that protected spot next to a pool.

This last winter wore some fronds off of that A street King palm..can you believe the gardeners cut off every single frond in spring? Its was a trunk and spear. Now,it seems to have a nice crown. Do that to a Howea and wait a decade..

I'm sure the fronds are not as protected as in 1990 because it's a much larger tree now. I absolutely hate when I hear about these "gardeners" who do very unnatural things to trees/plants!

I wanted to also say the king palms on Bruce Drive in Fremont are 7 palms, not 5. I forgot because it's been so many years since I planted them and lived there.
