I've seen only a few of this species in the Bay Area. It's really tender to cold. Calliandra tweedii is the one that I've seen growing up there more commonly.
Yes, Calliandra haematocephala is definitely a winter bloomer.

It's a fun plant to grow. I had one once. I don't have room for one, though. It's a very common shrub/tree here.
