Evergreen grass with white variegation. Tough, hardy, useful for lighting up semi-shaded areas.

I can only get away with it because the soil here is so sandy! This is all in my new shade garden, and I was so desperate to garden today that I planted these in the rain!

I love grasses they are so useful ......

Lovely one, goes a little ragged in our garden, I wish I could get out and plant, biut still far too wet.

Most of mine is too A. Will the rains ever cease? I feel like we are going to be living in a country of bogs and Midges!

I had a walk round my garden on Sunday after the rain cleared the snow......all I can say is what a dismal mess :o( I love this grass, added to my favs/list.

Lovely choice Karen :)

Thanks! This new shady garden is coming together now. I can't wait for spring!

You're not the only one :))

No your not..........I think we might have a reasonably dry day tomorrow, then it is back to rain again!!

we're all in it together gardening girlies! :)

I heard Monty say yesterday evening "what do we expect . . . it's JANUARY!" He was trying to encourage us gardeners to be patient, but we CAN'T WAIT :))

I saw that too! We still have February to get through, but yesterday I bought a packet of Cerinthe seeds out of sheer desperation! I will sow them in the conservatory and hopefully get them off to a good start. I also bought some young Digitalis plants to bring on in the greenhouse...it just gives me some hope that soon there will be spring...which is always my best time of year :)

Good for you Karen . . . lots of luck!

:) thanks!

Ooh, love this! Anything that makes a shady spot brighter and interesting is worth it's weight, and this will be......:))

Thanks! :) Janey, I also bought a Hakonechloea for this area. I've planted it right beside my turf seat. It's looking really dead, but hopefully it will come to life in the spring and be as lovely as your one in the pot!
2 Feb, 2013
Love Hakonechloea! And, inspired by you(!), I have just sown Eryngium, Linaria alpina and Anemone leveillii in the cold frame, as they are supposed to like a cold start . . . just needed to do SOMETHING :)

Fabulous Karen, I'm sure it will, mines like that too right now....:))
2 Feb, 2013
Yes,me too Sheila. I,ve sown mine, and they're in the conservatory, under cling film!
Thanks Janey! I also planted some of the Bowles' Golden Grass, which is almost evergreen as well. I can't believe I'm growing grasses now! For years I really wouldn't have entertained the idea....or ferns! But my tastes have changed.....they are such useful plants!

I know what you mean, I would like some taller ones this year, if my sister comes with me to the GC, she can't believe I would buy grasses, she always thinks they look like they should be pulled out, not planted...lol!
2 Feb, 2013
Grasses are terrific. My Stipa tenuissima still looks good, even after the snow :)
2 Feb, 2013
I think even your sister would think this evergreen one worth having Janey?
Sheila, I'm definitely a convert. My favourite is the lovely Carex 'prairie Fire' which really does look great all year around with the lovely bronze tips to the leaves.
3 Feb, 2013
I like the sound of that Carex Karen . . . I shall Google it. My own fave is Anemanthele lessoniana, a lovely bronze at the moment (though wish it was still called Stipa arundinacea!)

Ooooh, just looked that one up! Gorgeous!
