Flowering well!!

Warmth Moti, warmth! I always start them off in the conservatory.
I'm a little disappointed with them this year, in as much as the flower stems seem rather short Plantaholic.

Thanks Meanie...They were in my sun-room, but i suppose the temperature would have dropped at night....

Alan Titchmarsh was recommending these on his programme last night (Fri 7.30pm) , they looked wonderful on his arch and started me wanting them again !!!

They look amazing . I must try some !

10 Jul, 2011

One of my "must haves"!

Goodness, youve done it again..where DO you put these plants in winter? Oh for a conservatory..this is one I would definitely grow. The nearest this I have to this is Alstroemeria "Birdy", the colours are the same..but truly this is "Glorious"!!!

10 Jul, 2011

I allow it to die back and put it in the cupboard under the stairs Tetrarch.

This is a blog that I did about them.........

I wonder if it would get vertigo if I put one in a cupboard over the stairs lol! Joking..well only half..I am considering it!

10 Jul, 2011

As the blog said, they're very easy!

11 Jul, 2011

Meanie:

Wow! Absolutely superb!

13 Jul, 2011

If the tubers have continued to multiply as they have in years past I should have a tremendous show next year Delonix!

13 Jul, 2011

Yes, I understand the tubers grow larger and multiply...and the plant grows larger every year, also.

13 Jul, 2011

It hasn't got the height of previous years, although I did put it outdoors earlier than usual......

13 Jul, 2011

Meanie:

You still have a lot of summer ahead. It could grow larger.

15 Jul, 2011

I think that it's peaked Delonix. It'll be making nice fat new tubers from now on!

15 Jul, 2011

It's peaked! It's only July 15th. There should be a lot more growing ahead.

16 Jul, 2011

I know! It bloomed and grew for much longer last year. I think that this constant cycle of warm weather followed by cool weather has not agreed with it.
Not too bothered as long as it's producing tubers though. Plus, all the blooms came at pretty much the same time, giving quite a display.

16 Jul, 2011

Meanie:

I guess warm then cool weather can affect this plant...as it is native to tropical Africa.

17 Jul, 2011

That's my theory.......

18 Jul, 2011

It's a good theory.

18 Jul, 2011

Well, the good news is that the wind blew the pot over today exposing on of the tubers - that one tuber has at least two viable offsets already!

18 Jul, 2011

That's great! You should be able to have multiple plants next year.

18 Jul, 2011

They seem to double up every year, so maybe eight to ten tubers next year.......

18 Jul, 2011

Meanie:

Wow! You'll have to send me some. :>)

20 Jul, 2011

I'm going for a few seeds Delonix..........

20 Jul, 2011

Just fantastic, Meanie! Envy envy envy!!!!!!!!

12 Aug, 2011

Thanks Tommymoo - one of the easiest of the "exotics" to grow.

12 Aug, 2011

Really? I'm always tempted to buy gloriosa, but... I lost two mandevilles (sp?), which is, in my mind, similar to gloriosa. For that reason, I don't think I can grow gloriosa, too. I think a part of the reason I failed was that our conservatory wasn't warm enough; it goes down to.. I don't know exactly but maybe 5 degrees (c)? What is the minimum temperature for growing gloriosa, Meanie?

12 Aug, 2011

Very different plants Tommymoo - I allow the tubers to die back in the winter.
Here's the blog that I did about growing them (or how I do it anyway)..............
