Weird, but very beautiful.

Thanks all!

Just when I think that a seed pod is forming it falls off Alex!

wow! that should brighten up anyone's morning.

My mother-in-law was given one of these a few years ago. I'd have to keep rooting cuttings for her, as she was always able, somehow, to kill off the resulting plants. I took the last possible cutting from her almost dead plant this summer, but she recently decided to give it to me. :-) Have just counted 20 blooms on my "Congo Cockatoo".

Thanks Amy and Sticki!

David - yours likes the shorter daylight hours too then!

7 Dec, 2011

Still stuck in transit.... :(

Anyway...... I like the name too! NyumNyumMensis - could be be a small spring roll!

It does seem to be enjoying its new home, Meanie. I am, personally, totally perplexed as to why my M-i-L could not manage to root cuttings, and keep alive, this member of the Busy Lizzie family????????? The only space I had for my plant, now 2ft tall, was on the turn of my stairway, almost up against a frosted double-glazed panel beside my front door, which is south-facing, and was the best place for light. I keep my heating on at just a peep when not in (and am out most of the time). Outdoor daytime temps only reaching 3 degrees C now and, yes, natural daylight is in short supply - but it loves it!!! Only problem I'm having is trying to get a pic of those "parrot beaks", due to lack of light mainly. :-(

LOL to rest of comments. Why do threads, so often, take a foodie turn, eventually, I wonder??????

Hope that you really do get reunited with your African Grey soon, Karen.

Sometimes, when I come home, very late at night, from work, I want to do a "Charlie", and sit and chat with my Congo Cockatoo/Parrot Plant - but am a bit scared that it might repeat comments made by the postman/flyer posters/cold callers, etc. Hey, but hang on a mo! This could be my very own CCTV (Congo Cockatoo TV)!! I know, my train of thought here is, er, well, to say the least....alarming. :-(

sorry David, my fault for the food.

CCTV would be very colourful and entertaining.

7 Dec, 2011

That is the other thing about it - it's growing like b#ggery!!

7 Dec, 2011

Oh dear ours is still outside.......methinks it might be upside down with its claws in the air lol

7 Dec, 2011

Like a Norwegian Blue!!!

Meanie:

Your looks better than mine. Do you fertilize it?

I have mine planted in the front yard under my pygmy date palms...it tends to dry out a lot, though.

13 Dec, 2011

I haven't fed it yet Delonix......

I do know though that they dislike being dry - mine gets a good soak once a week.

13 Dec, 2011

Meanie:

Wow! Water once a week! I need to water mine practically every day or it'll wilt! We had some decent rain today...so I won't have to water it for a few days, now. :>)

13 Dec, 2011

Mine is potted up with a fairly moisture retentive mix (multi-purpose compost and sphag moss).

13 Dec, 2011

That's a good idea...as this plant loves water.

14 Dec, 2011

You are pardoned, Sticki...burp.burp!!:-))

That is the trouble, Meanie - it is growing like your B*****y!! Yes, Dotty, if outdoors, now, will not be surprised if you have a rather stiff Norwegian Blue!!

Due to max daytime temps here of only 3C, and having to have artificial heating, wth its dryness, on 24/7, at the lowest setting, to prevent last year's disasters) even when at work all day, my "Cockatoo" is very happy (so she tells me) :-))

15 Dec, 2011

David - a GoY member kindly included an I.kilimanjarii offset in a "gift box" that I received a couple of weeks ago. That is growing like there's no tomorrow too!
