Todays Mango harvest. (Mangifera indica (Mango))

What i picked today and at least as many had been eaten by my family over the last few weeks. Still more on the smaller Mango tree of the two I have. It's more shrub like than tree like so far.

Mango trees are so long-lived, they can take their sweet time growing.

I keep topping my mango tree. I don’t have enough room for another big tree.

I think about doing that...but worry that we might have a freeze and what the total loss might be. There is always something different about growing these in the bay area. We also don't get the high heat of SoCal or the valley so it's like a climatic island for the Mango tree here.

I think your tree has gotten to the size a freeze most likely would do little damage.

But, I do understand what you mean. We who went through the December 1990 freeze in the SF Bay Area will never for it, even though it’s been almost 33 years. Although, I think a freeze like that we’ll most likely never see in our lifetime.

That's a fine harvest you have! Interesting to hear you both discussing the possibilities of a freeze and caring for your fruit trees too.

I'm not in a "Always frost free climate" Kate. Some years yes, most years one night of frost can nip the tropicals. So close to the magic frost free.

Kate,

I used to live in the same city (for years) as Stan. Here in SD we don’t get freezes or temps below 40 F (6 c) very often. Most mornings lows in winter are above 50 degrees (10 degrees c).

December of 1990 was a very rare event, weather data going back the Mission Days in northern California never recorded such cold temps.

See who else is growing Mangifera indica (Mango).

See who else has plants in genus Mangifera.
