Thank you for the lovely comments, and welcomes ... the Penstemons really do blast with colour there's no two ways about that. The individual flowers themselves open as a pale blue (almost common sage), after a day or two they become iridescent, almost luminous and finally mature into the rich lilac.
Somehow the colour doesn't seem quite real to your eyes - digital cameras can't quite get to grips with them.
Sadly, this picture is not mine :( But it was the only one I could find that came close to representing the colour.
I'd heartily recommend this cultivar if you want a spring and early summer border blue.
