Ants in compost

Hi All, I have an old compost bin which basically has old leaves and grass cutting in nothing more . I have been using it as layer in my new reall attemp as composting should I kill the ants in it and carry or or get rid of the contents?

Thanks Sid but will I be spreading ant nests throughout my garden when I come to use the compost !! ?
I have enough of them in the carden without making more ?

In my opinion, you will already have as many ants nests in your garden as it can support - nature finds it's own balance in this respect. Ants are generally beneficial in the garden, predating on other insects.
I believe ants are rather like bees in that each nest only contains one egg-laying female, the queen. So if you were to split up a nest, it seems to me that only the portion that contains the queen would survive to make a new nest.........but I'm no entomologist!

Interst vews they are all over the pace sometimes. Must admit Ants arn't my favourite insect...

Don't kill the ants - they do no harm at all. And they help mix the compo too. A healthy compo bin should have a lot of life going on in it all the time - a whole little munching/pooping community!
