Coincidence or wishful thinking ?

I have been deadheading the chives ,over the past week, and composting them..and this is what I started thinking..as you do…If certain insects and nasties ,find the smell of onion or garlic, not to their liking..would it have an effect on slugs and snails, which congregate on the inside of the lid and sides of my compost bin ?
Well,I have kept checking..especially after the rain,as there are usually more then, having sneaked through the vents..and I am happy to report, that I haven’t found any at all..! I would love to hear any thoughts on this…do you think this could be the reason…or am I just lucky ?

I think you've made a very valid point there, Bloomer! Schhh! You should market that!

On a slightly different point: I've been trying to germinate chive seeds over several seasons and failed miserably! How do you grow the little devils? :o(

Meant to add - well done on achieving a possible solution to the slimies! Trouble is - where are they lurking now .........?????

I bet the little so and so's are lurking in the bottom, waiting for the smell to go.:Lol. To be fair,I don't get too many in there..as I use Garlic deterrents in the garden..but sometimes the tiny snails are attached to plants, when I cut them back..so I don't see them.. It would be great if if works..I usually have something to throw in,every day..so will see how it goes..:o)

Nariz..I have never tried Chives from seeds,I bought my first one as a plant, and just keep splitting it..and in answer to your 2nd question...I have just left a theory on my above comment,..they could be playing hide and seek .Lol...

not sure to be honest - but sounds a good theory - I actually put slugs in the compost to help munch it down - although not been many slugs this year - prob the drought - but I do really water garden a lot. Somebody wrote a blog on garlic spray putting off aphids

had not had problems with germinating chives but for some reason the garlic chives didn't grow at all.....

good thought about the smell... I'm now interested to see if I'm not only deterring the rabbits with dried chilli flakes.....

I'd be concerned at putting slugs in the composter as they may well lay their eggs in there . . .

not sure shirley tulip but I don't think their eggs survive in there my Mum told me

If I find any they go into the brown bin ... along with stuff I can't compost ... Bindweed from the allotment etc. ... then the Council dispose of them !

14 Jun, 2011

You are lucky to have that facility,Shirley..we don't have a bin for garden waste..but the council will collect bin bags, outside your property,if you ring them..Luckily ,I have my overspill compost heap,in my 'mini forest 'for surplus garden waste..:o)

We have to pay for the brown bin, Sandra! Nowt for free down here ... lol! About £70 for a year ... sounds a lot but when you consider the number of trips to the amenity tip I'd be doing with waste from our garden/the allotment/Mum's garden etc. it makes sense. We got it about 6 weeks ago and I've become adept at squashing stuff in to get the maximum use out of it! It's collected fortnightly so 'hums' a bit when collection is due. : o ((

Wow,that's expensive..I thoght it would be included in your council tax...Our collections are free,we just have to leave the bin bags by the kerb..and they recycle it all,for the parks etc..if any garden stuff is found in the ordinary waste bins, you can be fined,..and people have been !

I keep telling people it's not cheap living down here! That makes me think of my old Nan as she used to worry about putting weeds in the dustbin, so she would leave them on the back path to dry, then put them in newspaper before they went in the bin. : o )

You are not kidding,Shirley..aw,bless your dear old Nan..and I guess it was allowed anyway ,not like now..:o)

Gosh we are so lucky here in south kesteven, I payed a tenner to the council when the green bin was first offered, they collect fortnightly, only time they missed was when the snow was on the ground and they were busy keeping the roads open. I `don`t get slugs in my compost bins, rarely any snails either, mind you with the amount of frogs in my garden now I rarely see any slugs in the garden at all, be nice if they could keep the snail population down as well...

I found a huge snail in a watering can tonight ... then a couple of 'sluggus giganticus' climbing up the Sunflower stalks. Grrr!

How lovely for you Shirley :o)..
