can I dig shredded paper into my veg.plot

I can't think of a reason why not but it might be preferable to put it in your compost heap, let ir rot down and then add it to the veg garden

My grampy always lined the bean trench with newspaper.

Shredded paper would be better off composted first or used as a mulch. A small amount can be dug into the ground but not too much.

I do that too Meanie, a tip from the old guys on the allotment, a nice bit of carpet helps with holding the moisture too.

I have always lined my beans trenches with newspapers. I find it works well on clay soil. I also put my shredded papers in the compost, I water them first in not too thick layers.

I use shredded paper all the time in the veg plot. Helps to retain moisture. Ive got clay soil and it works for me!

Yes I can see it would in a heavy clay soil but not so much so in a light loam.
