My grampy always lined the bean trench with newspaper.

Shredded paper would be better off composted first or used as a mulch. A small amount can be dug into the ground but not too much.

I do that too Meanie, a tip from the old guys on the allotment, a nice bit of carpet helps with holding the moisture too.

I have always lined my beans trenches with newspapers. I find it works well on clay soil. I also put my shredded papers in the compost, I water them first in not too thick layers.

I use shredded paper all the time in the veg plot. Helps to retain moisture. Ive got clay soil and it works for me!

Yes I can see it would in a heavy clay soil but not so much so in a light loam.

I can't think of a reason why not but it might be preferable to put it in your compost heap,let ir rot down and then add it to the veg garden
