When you say 'broccoli' do you mean autumn cauliflower or Calabrese (white or green?)
I think the only way to get really good results from either is:
1. Plenty of space between plants, at least two feet, perhaps even 2' 6'' or more.
2. Copious amounts of water.
3. Feed with good nitrogenous fertiliser.
The only time I've grown a real beauty was in the polytunnel where it got watered daily with the other plants. It was also protected from caterpillars and other nasties. And when it won a prize in the village show, someone accused me of buying it, not growing it!

it is the green and I guess I am doing most of what you said to do. Guess I will have to live with what I get or go to the store! That was funny about someone accusing you of buying a home grown. Thanks for the smile and advise!

It isn't purple sprouting broccoli you are growing is it? Or nine-star perennial, which is like tiny cauliflowers? They both have much smaller heads than the large broccolis but are equally delicious in my opinion!

Saw your pic and it looks much like mine, which has not produced a head yet. I'm thinking it is not getting enough sunlight. Just a thought. I have tried for 2 years and have only had small plants and crowns. Don't know what I am doing wrong either.
