Broccolli is basic made up of thousands of flowers, and its the flower buds we eat. It may of just been left too long and naturally gone to seed. Or it has suffered form a lack of water for some time and gone to seed quicker than if it was kept watered. Veg tend to bolt (flower and go to seed) in dry conditons- they must produce seed to continue further generations!

it also happened to our caulis so quite possibly is something to do with the irregular weather weve been having, hope you eventually get your answers

The problem of growing your own veg is everything is ready at once - the answer to this problem is to learn how to store the various veggies. I blanched and froze loads of stuff last year - beans, peppers, caulis, etc, and was using them throughout the winter.
