Its the right thing to do. They say it encourages the plant to continue to produce a succession of flowers.

I understand it will do two good things. One is to make the planting look tidier and nicer. And the other, like Inverglen says, is to keep the plants in a flowering mood so that they carry on producing. It is the same with all bedding plants generally.
