why are the leaves on my cooking apple tree curling and turning brown

many more small apples than normal have dropped and the leaves have small holes in them. This tree is about 20 years old and we have clay soil.

You should thin the fruit out anyway (assuming that you can reach it!) so that you get less but better fruit. The leaves are not a problem unless they affect a large proportion of the total leaf area. Is it bad or just a bit unsightly? Apple leaves often look a bit tatty by now. Check underneath the leaves for insects, just in case.
