Hello everyone, as it was the first fine day we've had for ages I thought I would make the most of it and do some digging and I came across this. Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks in advance.

It looks like potatoes to me, do the tubers smell 'potatoey'?

Doctor Bob is right, it looks just like a dahlia tuber. If you look carefully at the top you can see the characteristic reddish shoots where the stems are starting to grow. Why not pop it in a pot and enjoy some nice late dahlias flowering in the autumn?

Thanks to all. It's back in the ground and hopefully I'll be able to post a picture of a lovely dahlia in the not too distant future. Thanks again.

I guess we'll all look very silly if something entirely different comes up! Good luck. Just bought some well grown dahlia plants for 1 euro each in a car boot sale, so hopefully will be joining you with some good blooms in late summer!

At first glance it loks like a Dahlia tuber or it could be Bryony.
