Bamboo shoots

I have some bamboo plants in my garden that were planted last year. The new shoots from this year are all being eaten by squirrels. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Are you sure it's the squirrels? Never heard of them attacking bamboo before (maybe check wtih your local zoo to see if their panda is missing?!) Could you put some wire mesh or netting over the plant just while it gets going? Bamboo grows pretty quickly, so maybe it just needs the chance to 'get away'? Otherwise, an animal repellant might work - you will find a selection at the garden center.
