Cotinus Coggyria. There are two around that are the most common I believe , one called Royal Purple and one called Flame.
If you are planning on getting one then if they like the growing conditions in your garden they can get very big.

It's common name is Smoke Bush, Cotinus the Latin and one used on most nurseries. It produces feathery pinkish flowers in summer that kind of looks like smoke.

Yes, Cotinus is gorgeous, and CAN get quite big, but it doesn't mind being pruned back "to shape", so it's easy to keep under control. I keep mine to 7' - 8' . . . well worth buying!

Agree with Sheila. Cotinus along with pretty much any shrub can be kept to a desired height by a little pruning at the appropriate times each year

Looks like a Cotinus from here, but could do with a closer look at the leaves to be sure.
