Is my Acer okay?
By Oddbillie

Several weeks ago, I moved my Acer out of direct wind and have continued to water but the leaves are turning browner and drier by the day and are now literally just brushing off.
Am I doing something wrong? It has been repotted many months ago, into this post and seemed happy at first but now he seems very unhappy!
Any ideas anyone?

Once the leaves have been wind burnt they do not recover, they simply - as you've noticed - die off. As it is now mid August the Acer will not put out new leaves. Just keep it in a semi-shaded position and out of the wind and next year it should be fine.

It does look a bit frazzled... but mine did the same tho' they recover quite quickly once they are in a happy place!

Mine has not got new leaves Moongrower...you're right but it does have healthy looking buds ready for next year if that makes sense.

Hi Fluff, yup I understand what you mean :-)

Thanks all. It is actually in sun where it is now so I will move it tomorrow and hopefully find it a happier place.
What about watering it - how often etc?

OB until you have the Acer well established in the ground you need to water on a regular basis. Scrape away about an inch of soil and see if it feels moist below that, if it doesn't water.

Excellent. Thanks MG. Appreciate all your advice as usual.
Being a novice, I just never know if I'm doing right by everything out there. Some things are flourishing whilst one or two others look a little , well, less healthy shall we say but it's all a learning curve and Ali keeps saying they will change from season to season.
Thanks again

Yeh I know, thanks Mookins. Just being a novice I'm not use to all this shedding blooms, leaves and anything else!
I do my dead-heading and pruning and the daft thing is that the Acer went similar to this last year but you forget and worry and think you're doing something wrong - lol!!
Hope all is well your end.

and oddbillie, water when the compost is dryish on the top - probably 3/4 litres twice a week in the summer when warm, once a week if the weather's cooler - EVEN if it is raining!

Push a chopstick/barbeque skewer a few inches into the soil, after 2-3 minutes, take it out. If its dry or nearly dry, sprinkle water onto the surface of the soil to dampen it, after a few minutes water it until water flows out of the drainage holes.
If the chopstick is wet, don't water.
I hope this helps. If it doesn't, it gave you something to read.

mine went like this OB so i repoted into big pot and its against the fence away from winds to, its been great now, lots of new growth

Yeh, we repotted when we moved in and the pot is plenty big enough and is not directly against fence but just out slightly. Avoids most winds. I reckon he'll be fine for next year and then we may plant in ground possibly.
Thanks SB
