i need to move a bed of red hot pokers they have been in more than 20 years

you should be able to move them any time now or in the spring but I dont find they do well in shady areas. so you may find you lose the flowering potential. I would use a spade and cut through the root stock or use two forks back to back. Plant to the same depth as before and water well.
