I've found that buddleia thrive no matter what. My soil is alkaline and heavy clay.....quite poor. However, they shoot up every year and put on a wonderful display.
I'd mix a little bone meal into the bottom of the hole to give it a good start on growing healthy roots.

just want to explain what the lady in the garden center ment, conifers take all the goodness out of the soil, but buddleia love that sort of poor soil' a bucket of water in the hole befor you put the plant in, and go easy on the feed they will not thank you for it; a little surport in the first year ,they are not big strong lads the first year , they will be like a bush first year geting bigger and stronger as the seasons pass, watch the plants in your garden and they will teach you, OK hun'

Take it out of the pot before you put it in the ground - you've said should you "put the pot in the ground...". Bear in mind it will get 12 feet high in a season and about 6-8 feet wide front to back and side to side before you decide where to plant it.

Yes plant your buddleia in the ground asap to give it chance to settle in while the soil is still warm. They get pretty big so give it plenty of room. A dressing general fertiliser mixed in with the backfill soil will help it on its way.Don't plant too close to the conifers as they are thirsty plants as well. Good luck!!
