HELP WITH TREE IDENTIFICATION ...

Hi! Can anyone identify this tree that has decided to grow in my garden? I noticed it one day as a small seedling about 5 inches high so decided to leave it to see what happened - and this is the result. This photo was actually taken a year ago so the tree is now quite a bit taller - a very fast grower. It is about 18-24 months old now. I live in Menorca so have a Mediterranean climate. I cannot find much on the internet that would help me to identify it. It does resemble a eucalyptus (a bit with the leaves) but definitely isn't. I have noticed that it is used as a municipal tree by the local town councils and there are many roads in town with these trees planted in them. I looked around locally and there don't seem to be any in the near vicinity, but I guess the wind or a bird has dropped this when it was a seed!! Any help towards a name would be great! Many thanks. No idea - would need a close up of the leaves... my first thought is some form of salix

Ninap - you could always ask your local council :-)

Looks very similar to a Mimosa or Acacia Dealbata....has yellow pom pom flowers in Spring. They are used for Municipal planting in Spain.....:o) Yours looks to be of the height ready to flower.....you should see the buds forming December.

dont think its acacia, leaves are wrong for this plant.

Thank you everyone for your input - I will look into the various suggestions, and failing that go to the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and ask them what it is!

You said, "It does resemble a eucalyptus (a bit with the leaves) but definitely isn't."
I say "Why not?" cos it does look like a eucalyptus (there are over 300 species) to me.
Fold a leaf in half, if it breaks as you fold it, the sap is white and smells of eucalyptus, then that's what you have got. Also does the trunk peel and loose patches of bark revealing green bark beneath? Eucalyptus shed it's bark as it grows. Not all Eucalyptus leaves smell when crushed. The leaves that have been shed from the tree will be dry brittle sharp and brown in colour and burn well.
I doubt it's a willow as they are high water demanders and would not do well as a street tree.

Hi Stjohntongue - I have folded a leaf and there is no smell when it breaks, but the leaves that fall are very dry, brittle and brown - I have been raking up loads of them recently! I am going to my local garden centre soon - I will take a small branch with me ...

Have you checked Mimosa Dealbata Ninap.......it looks very similar to the one I had in my Spanish garden....in fact identical leaves....

Had a look on Google and it is the Golden Wattle....a type of Acacia. I bought mine from a nursery in Catalunya and it was named as a Dealbata...not fragrant. Strip like leathery leaves not the delicate fern type. It can become quite invasive given the right conditions, ours was pruned regularly by early spring winds though. Acacia pycnantha.

Hi Janey - quite possibly ... I have looked at some google images of the Golden Wattle and it does look similar. No signs of any flowers yet though. I will let you all know what the local garden centre thinks when I get there - hopefully in the next week or 2! Thanks for your input.
