My friend bought a bare root apple tree. I told her she should have waited untill spring. Should she plant it in a pot and plant out in the spring as we are expecting some frosty weather? Can she store in in a sheltered position outside? Thanks

you could mulch the soil around the tree with somthing like straw or hay, the soil should be wet now but if it is dry water it , and SH is 100% right.

This is the best time for planting a bare root tree, so get it in right now before the frost stops her from planting.

She can plant a bare rooted tree straight into the ground as long as the ground itself isn't frozen. The frost won't hurt it once it's in.
