Yes, you do need to clear up the leaves, Malcolm, otherwise they will rot and kill the grass underneath. It is generally OK to leave them on flower beds provided they do not blanket the plants.

Don't sweep them up when it's frosty either - walking on the grass will kill it where you've walked.

in the woods they stay on the ground and rot down and feed the trees they came from, do you want your lawrn to disapear and have to grow bluebells and foxgloves were you used to have a lawrn, sweep them up then,
