Well if it is asparagus itself once it has grown to a decent size you will be able to eat it, if it is the fern it will simply look pretty in the garden.

I have these in my garden , they start off as what looks like asparagus then grow into a large fern (reminds me of the fern they used to put with buttonholes for weddings ) they end up with red berries after the tiny white flowers.

That is the joy of a new garden discovering what is in it... I would suggest you go through a whole year to see exactly what is in the ground before you do anything. We were lucky garden was 98% grass so we had a blank canvas to play with.

I was told by my elderly neighbour when I moved into my bungalow that it was 'Sparra Grass '.....It took a few years until I actually saw the plant before it grew into the fern and I had to laugh when I realised what it was. Bless him :-)
