Looks like one of the burdocks to me, either the Lesser burdock (Arctium minus) or Greater burdock (Arctium lappa). Burdock as in 'Dandelion & Burdock' drink.
They grow to about 4ft with a spread about the same, heads of thistle like flowers, loved by butterflies & bees - then they turn into the burrs which contain the seeds, prickly and attach to your clothing.
We have a huge bed of this (not really intentional) near the chicken run on the field. Every year I think I will let it flower for the bees, then cut it down before it spreads - never works, always forget!
Hate to say it, but unless you want a wild garden I would get rid of it.

I was thinking the leaves of Butterburr. This produces a dome nof pink/white flowers very early in the year followed by leaves like these. They grow in damp, woodland places.

Well unless you have a lap top all you can do is see the pic sideways!

Yes. Sorry about that, Moongrower. My daughter sent the picture from her phone, and no matter how I rotate it in my photo programme, I cannot get it to upload any other way. However, many thanks to Honeysuckle and Bulba for the ID.

MG, just right click on the photo, click on rotate, choose 90 deg left or right and the image will appear the right way up.

I was thinking Butterburr as well.

Not on my PC, Myron. It is possible to copy/paste into a Word document or transfer a picture into photoshop but this is usually too much trouble.

you can just right click and save photo to your computer and then rotate it using photo viewer quick and easy but i have noticed portrait photos uploaded on here always turn round, they never used to.

That's exactly what I did when I received the photo, Catty. It rotated on my computer, but still wouldn't upload correctly. I don't have that problem with my own photos, though.

Thanks Hywel - I shall pass all the info on to my daughter.

No right click on a Mac Myron - I turn the laptop sideways :)

my first thought was the leaf of the coltsfoot. did she notice any yellow flowers in the spring.

Coltsfoot, by the way it's showing a tendency to spread around on the floor like that. Plus, burdock leaves would be very large by now.

Thank you, Sbg and Worthy. They've just moved in the last two months and it's a large garden. I think she's going to have a lot of identifying to do during the first year!

I thought they were coltsfoot. If so they will disappear in winter and yellow flowers without leaves will come up in early spring. Used to be used as an excellent cough medicine. Oops sorry SBG ansd Worthy, you got there first...
